I was raised by a bibliophile, so during my formative years, while I colored and played at her feet, my view of my mother was usually cut off at the neck by a book’s cover jacket. Illustrating the covers of those books was artwork created by some of the best illustrators of all time: Franzetta, Vallejo, Giancola, the Hildebrandts and so many, many more. Their images formed my childhood and my imaginary worlds. Those images inspired me to learn to read, to love fantasy and the written word.
Despite the influence of art in my life and my passion for it, despite being told by everyone who knew me that I was an artist, despite having earned a degree in fine art and hearing the call in my heart to become an illustrator, I pursued other goals. I became a horse trainer who could draw ridiculously well. I became a teacher who painted in fingerpaints with kindergarteners at school and came home to practice my skills in realism with oil paint in my spare time. I even showed my work in fine art galleries, but realism didn’t satisfy me. Near the end of 2018 I attended a fantasy convention with my husband, Tim Waggoner, and was inspired by the artwork in the art show. I decided then to begin bending realism to suit my imagination, which is where I have found true joy in my artwork.

I don't subscribe to branding myself with one style, or one medium. I use several methods and materials to create my work. My formal education is in oil paint, and when I paint in oils I often paint from photographic references displayed inverted on a computer. I flip my canvas upside down and paint that way so that I am not distracted by the subject and instead focus on the colors I am using and where I want them to go. When I draw with colored pencils I plan my drawing in advance using photographic references and models. I use primarily prismacolor pencils, though I have experimented with other brands.
When I am not in my studio, I spend my time either training birds of prey, or running through the woods hunting with them as a licensed falconer. I volunteer with raptor rehabilitators to help sick and injured raptors recover so they can be returned to the wild. When they cannot be returned to the wild, I help by training them with new sk

I volunteer with raptor rehabilitators to help sick and injured raptors recover so they can be returned to the wild. When they cannot be returned to the wild, I help by training them with new skills they will need for a life with humans. My love of nature, its balance, mystery and beauty, is a primary inspiration for my fantasy artwork.
